At the end of the day, there aren’t too terribly many people out there that are excited at the prospect of buying car insurance.
However, at the same time, we all know that we need to have car insurance under our belts to safely (and legally) operate our vehicles, so it’s just one of those things that we need to knock out as soon as possible – without breaking the bank!
Well, that’s usually where things get a little bit sticky.
You see, too many people out there (through no fault of their own) end up getting sucked into car insurance deals that aren’t in their best interest. Unfortunately, a lot of this can be avoided – but only if you know where to look for the “car insurance buying land mines” out there and avoid all of these mistakes as often as you can.
The list below is not complete with comprehensive of all the mistakes that you should be on the lookout for, but they are enough to get you started so that you end up with the best car insurance policy for your specific needs without spending too terribly much money in the process.
Ignoring other offers
If you jump on top of the first car insurance (the Norwegians call it bilforsikring) offered you find (even if it promises the cheapest rates), you are likely to be handing over more money than you would have been if you’ve just looked at two or three different offers and compare them against one another.
Always compare different quotes against at least two other offers if possible, and more if you have the time. That’s how you get the best deals on car insurance.
Not reading the fine print
Secondly, you need to make sure that you are reading all of the fine print about your particular car insurance agreement.
Make sure that your insurance policy is exactly what you expected and agreed to, and that your coverage is exactly what you wanted, and that the prices happened mysteriously changed overnight. Most car insurance businesses aren’t going to be shady or underhanded, but it only takes getting bitten once to sour you on the entire industry.
Getting less coverage than you need
Lastly, you need to make sure that you are getting all of the coverage that you need, and not just the coverage that you want to pay for. There’s a world of difference between the cheapest car insurance out there and the best value for car insurance. One will have you worrying about an emergency situation happening where you know you won’t be protected, whereas the other will keep extra money in your bank account while still giving you the protection that you’re after.
Make the right decision.
